Either I have lost my ability to navigate the Internet, or the Wikipedia is missing an worthwhile entry. Within the “Industry” the term “Soft Launch” generally means that you are attempting to launch a website or campaign prematurely. This is usually caused by scope or feature creep, lack of resources, a shift in deadlines, or mismanaged stakeholder expectations.
If I missed the boat, please drop a link to the Wikipedia’s definition of a soft launch.

Wow. I must say that this is one of the best designed wordpress sites I’ve ever seen. I didn’t really see any other forum to say this other than this field, so sorry for posting it here. I never trusted Wikipedia that much either.

I am pretty sure that the term is actually used to refer to a “private” launch, a private one for a specific set of control users (who are also aware of their role as “testers”), so you can work out the sort of bugs that can only be found this way. The term was stolen from th restaurant biz, where it is commonplace to open for a private group of people, for the same reason, find the bottlenecks and problems with your process or product service that can only be found by operating that actual test subject.

In my experience a soft launch could mean either launching a new site to the public but not really announcing or promoting it; or it could mean launching it internally or to a small group and not making it public. However nowdays it seems like everyone just holds a “public beta.”
